Friends of The Publishing Museum Membership Levels

Having traveled numerous times to the Florida panhandle, George Mortimer West moved and built his home in St. Andrews in 1887. His influence as an a writer, promoter, developer, railroad executive, and publisher, combined with his love of the area and vision for its future, earned him the title of Panama City’s “Founding Father.” In 1920, George and his wife Lillian built the Panama City Publishing Company building in St. Andrews where both wielded their influence through the publication of three local newspapers. After George’s death in 1926, Lillian continued to operate the Publishing Company. Being the first woman to register to vote in St. Andrews, she never backed down from an issue she felt was important or a cause in which she believed. There are many fiery editorials as reference for her zealous and intense opinions. The Publishing Company continued to operate until 2005 when Charles “Buddy” West, George’s great-great grandson, agreed to sell to the City of Panama City with the agreement that the building and contents be preserved and open to the public. In doing so, Buddy continued the West Family commitment to our community’s history and progress. In 2008, the City of Panama City renovated the building and reopened to the public as the Panama City Publishing Co. Museum where the original presses and type collection are on display and still used daily by volunteer printers who print cards, posters and art. To honor the contribution of the vision and devotion of George and Lillian West and their family to St. Andrews and Panama City, we proudly offer our membership levels as a reflection of the newspaper publishing business, which George and Lillian so proudly and effectively pioneered.

All membership levels are important to historic preservation of the Museum and the St. Andrews community. All levels are given advance purchase opportunities for our “passport” events, as well as advanced notice and invitations to upcoming events, exhibits and receptions. All members will also receive a special car decal, “Proud Sponsor of the Panama City Publishing Co. Museum” and will receive discounts at participating St. Andrews merchants. Each level includes additional benefits appropriate to that level. Family memberships are available for all levels at $10 over the listed price. We hope you will be as generous as your circumstances allow.

One way is through a monetary gift to the Museum Gift Fund. The Gift Fund allows the Publishing Museum to further its mission through outreach and educational activities, improvements to the permanent exhibition, development of temporary exhibitions, and the purchase of preservation and letterpress printing supplies.

Monetary donations

Every little bits helps! And we appreciate your generosity toward our efforts to preserve our local history and keep the art of letterpress alive for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
Donate to the museum collection

If you have an artifact that matches the time frame and purpose of our collection, we would love to consider incorporating it into the collection at the Panama City Publishing Co. Museum. Please submit this donation offer form to museum@historicstandrews.com, along with a photograph of the piece you’d like to donate, and our Museum Operations and Procedures committee will determine whether your piece would fit into our collection.

Another way to make a difference at the Panama City Publishing Museum is to sponsor the restoration of an artifact at the Museum.

Finally, the Panama City Publishing Museum has an ever-changing wish list, with operations, preservation, and educational needs. Financial, artifact, and wish list items can be gifted as a tax deduction.
